Case Study: ECH UPS

ECH-logoProject Case Study: ECH Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
Date: January 2016
Services: UPS and Ongoing Maintenance Plan
Location: Parkside, South Australia

ECH is a leading non-profit aged care provider in Adelaide, offering a range of aged care services and facilities across South Australia, including 98 retirement villages.

Its head office is based on Greenhill Road at Parkside, and includes its communications room. It is the beating heart of ECH, connecting and communicating with all of its sites and staff.

The communications room’s UPS was no longer meeting the requirements of the organisation, and ECH contracted CSS to supply and install and new Uninterruptible Power Supply.

The previous system featured 2 battery back up units – a 10kVA and a 1kVA – one of which had failed completely. CSS recommended a replacement upgrade option to reduce the risk of an outage of the communications room. This took their back up power capacity from 11kVA to 15kVA – a significant improvement.

Our solution included supply and installation of the UPS unit, external bypass switch, distribution board, and capture plugs to connect the new equipment to the existing server racks.

Our project manager – Adam Cockshell – held a number of on-site meetings with key ECH team members beforehand, to ensure that everyone was comfortable with the solution, and plan for installation. We understand how nerve-wracking it can be when changing mission critical systems, and so we pride ourselves on our clear communication and language.

To ease installation and reduce downtime, the UPS unit was commissioned in our workshop. This is possible with smaller systems, and can significantly reduce the outage time. In this case, it could be reduced to 2-4 hours, instead of 8-10 hours – less than half the normal time!

The pre-works were conducted during the week, and ECH was left live on their existing system while we installed the new equipment. The change over then occurred on the weekend, so as to further reduce the disruption to their communications. The systems were switched over to the mains and back, giving them only minutes offline.

Due to the off site commissioning and other preparation, the installation was seamless and the new UPS was soon up and running; giving confidence back to an incredible valuable and mission critical organisation.

“Today’s installation went according to plan, and the quality of work is superb. It has truly lifted the level of the communications room.

Adam excels at customer relationship management, and the whole team were professional, considerate and neat.

We look forward to continuing the positive relationship with CSS.”

Lyn Mason, ICT Manager, ECH

We continue our work with ECH through our ongoing maintenance plan, providing regular preventative maintenance, and 24×7 service and support.
