New energy efficiency measure for Australian data centres coming soon

Work is underway to measure energy efficiency in Australia’s data centres, making it unique to our country’s climate and business environment.

However, it will follow the work of metrics and standards bodies from around the world.

The work is being carried out by the New South Wales Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) which runs the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) program on behalf of other Australian state and territory governments.

NABERS is used to measure energy and environmental efficiency in commercial buildings.

The objective of OEH is to create a similar quantitative measure for data centres.

OEH has been studying empirical data stemming from Australia’s data centres and metrics and standards used around the world such as Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).

They aim to determine the idiosyncrasies that make Australia’s data centers unique so that the NABERS rating tool for data centres can be custom-made for the Australian industry.
